SS-31 carries an alternating cationic/aromatic motif that drives accumulation in the inner mitochondrial membrane independent of membrane potential. Published work characterises its interaction with cardiolipin, effects on cristae architecture by electron microscopy, and electron-transport-chain supercomplex stability in aged rodent muscle and cardiac tissue.
