Rodent studies report upregulation of tyrosine hydroxylase and aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase transcription in the hypothalamus, which is the proposed mechanism behind its classification as an actoprotector in Soviet-era pharmacology. It is a WADA-prohibited substance and appears in the anti-doping analytical literature.
