DSIP was characterised by Schoenenberger and Monnier in the 1970s from dialysate of rabbits in delta-wave sleep. The literature covers electroencephalographic delta-power measurement in rabbits and rats, interactions with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and the long-running debate over whether an endogenous receptor for the peptide exists.
