Methylene blue cycles between oxidised and leuco forms at a redox potential that lets it shuttle electrons directly to cytochrome c, bypassing complexes I and III. It is a standard tool compound in mitochondrial bioenergetics, a monoamine oxidase and nitric oxide synthase inhibitor at higher concentrations, and a long-standing histological stain.
